floridian fun

10 years ago and almost a year after Preston was born, Bryan and I decided that we needed to take a break from work and parenting and everything else that life was handing us, and we set off for a week long vacation in sunny Mexico.  That week of leaving reality and just enjoying one another was a really important moment in our relationship, and we decided that it needed to become a new tradition.  Not necessarily jet setting off to Mexico, but flying somewhere, just the two of us, and leaving work and kids behind.  Since it's a bit of an expensive tradition, we have learned to spread it out and only travel once every two years and find ways to make it a little less harsh on the pocket book. We did head back to Mexico again when we found a great deal, and have also traveled with friends a few times to play in Orlando and L.A and San Fransisco area.  It's been two years since our last romantic getaway, so when the opportunity to stay at a friend's home down in the Tampa/Sarasota area came up, we jumped all over it!

We hopped on an airplane at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning and began our flight to Miami and then hopped on another flight to Tampa {hey, a quickie layover saved us $400 on airfare!}.

As soon as we arrived in Tampa, our tummies were rumbling, so I used Google maps to locate a restaurant on the beach.

This is quite the change in scenery from our typical Wisconsin weather and beaches and I was already stress free and smiling!

Our first day there consisted of cruising around just checking out the area and learning our way around the surrounding cities.  We finally arrived to our destination and fell asleep extremely early like the old boring folks we are.

Getting a good, peaceful, long rest was nice since we woke up feeling extremely refreshed and excited to head over to Anna Maria island to check out the beach!

We soaked up the sun and grabbed some grub!

As much as I figured I would just lay on the beach all day every day for four straight days, I got bored after about three hours and we decided to take a little road trip down the Longboat Key...

We ate at a local oyster bar that evening and must have been tuckered out from the sun and fun so we again called it an early night.

The following day we went back to the same beach and laid around for a few hours again.  I really wanted to explore the lovely waters so we chartered a boat at a local fishing/boating company which supposedly has the best fresh seafood in the entire area....

We got pretty lucky with the boat charter, we were the only two on the session we booked so we basically received a private tour of the entire area.  We first stopped on a sandbar to look for sand dollars and other cool water creatures.

Of course we just oooohed and aaahhhed and returned them back to the lovely waters.

I mentioned to the captain of the boat that I had never seen dolphins in their natural environment; she decided to change that!

That night we checked out the Sandbar Restaurant on Anna Maria island.

The food was delish and we watched the sunset on the beach which was absolutely breathtaking!

On Sunday we thought it would be fun to check out a few new beaches, so we went down to the famous Siesta Key beach.  We couldn't find parking so I decided that wasn't for me.  A few beaches down was Turtle beach and it was fairly quiet which is more to my liking.

We enjoyed a really fabulous lunch in downtown Sarasota and then did some walking around to check out some of the city.

We headed back to enjoy some ice cream and watch another beach sunset.

Monday was the last day of our quick little getaway, and we wanted to hit the water one last time before flying out, so we rented a jet ski and hit the waves of the gulf.

Although I didn't bring my camera, we did happen to have Bryan's cell phone on us to capture some fish which we originally thought were small dolphins until we got closer and realized they were just hungry giant fish.

I got pretty freaked out and we got out of there fast!

We flew out later in the day so we were able to take advantage of our final day there, but I couldn't wait to get home to my boys.  Five full days away was just enough time to get our fill of relaxation, work free stress free alone time in before heading back to our crazy awesome life back home.

  1. My aunt and uncle live in that area. Did you know people applaud the sunset at the Siesta Key beach? They took me there one time, and I thought that was a funny tradition. Glad you guys had such a nice time!

  6. Too cool! I live in Clearwater and frequent several of the places you mentioned. What did you think of Frenchy's? That used to be one of my favorite restaurants - you can't beat the view! I always tell my husband how blessed our children are to grow up with a beach for a backyard! Glad you enjoyed it here!

  8. We vacationed in Sarasota nearly every summer while I was growing up. We had a timeshare there, and always went to Disney World too. I can't wait to take my kids down in a few more years. I'm so glad you got a nice couple's vacation... though I'm definitely jealous!

  9. Oh how we looooove Siesta Key! My husband was born in Sarasota and he brought me down from Chicago to propose marriage 5 years ago. So gorgeous- the sand is incredible down there! So fun to see you and your husband enjoying my favorite place to go! :)

  11. I think we get spoiled living so close to the beach but seeing it through someone elses eyes always makes me appreciate it more. We live directly East of Tampa on the other coast and the large fish you saw were probably Tarpon. Totally harmless unless you're a fish. LOL!
    Have a lovely day.

    1. Yeah, I tried googling around potential fish options and that was one we thought it may be. Totally freaked me out at the time, lol. They went from being fun to watch to very hungry within a few seconds.

  16. Every time I read your blog I realize you and I have so much in common. My husband and i also learned that we need to take a vacation together with no kids and leaving our "jobs" behind. It is so important and we realized on our first trip that we were husband and wife, not just mom and dad! We own a place on Longboat Key. It is our favorite place to go so I have seen and been to many of the places you talked about. We leave for LBK (as we call it) in about 2 weeks so your pictures got me very excited! Thanks for sharing!

  19. My favorite places in the world are from Tampa south to Fort Meyers-ish, along the gulf coast. Such a wonderful place to be, glad you got to take the vacation!

(Jealous too because my hubby doesn't appreciate a beach vacation so we haven't taken one together yet, or me separately for that matter, since we've been together...but I got to a lot when I was younger, so much fun!)

Thanks for sharing so I can live vicariously through you (yet again!). :-)

  21. We go down there a couple times a year (luckily our family has a condo right on LBK). My girls love breakfast on the beach in Anna Maria (hello all you can eat pancakes and sand time while the parents relax). Starfish is always our dirst stop after the long drive in from Ohio. Never took the boat ride with the captain and her dog though (maybe when the girls are a little bigger).

We went down once without the girls - completely different trip and just as fun.

If you head down again you have to go to The Columbia in St. Armand's (sangria, salad, yum)

  22. You should have tried harder to find parking in Seista Key. It is worth it. Their beach is so beautiful and soft. We vacation there. :)

We got here on Friday and spent the first few days inside with my three boys. Past few days have been gorgeous. Cant wait for fireworks over the Gould of Mexico.

  26. I have just returned from 8 nights in Bali with my Mum & sister - the first time I have ever left the kids for more than a night or two - and, like you, it was so lovely to enjoy some R&R but also like you I couldn't wait to get back and see the kids. Isn't it a GREAT feeling to WANT to get back home after a holiday?! x

  27. You were in my hometown! I was born and raised in Bradenton! Sandbar restaurant is my FAV!! It's such a popular wedding place (my bro was married there)...it's always a fun romantic spot! Glad to see you had a relaxing time! Thanks for sharing your trip!

  29. Very envious of your vacation with the hubby! Can't wait for that one day....We have two girls 3.5 and 1yr and maybe thinking about another one more soon...so no major "alone" holidays in the planning for us!!! Can I ask where you left your three boys to have such as awesome holiday? Thanks for sharing the pics!!

  31. Looks like so much fun! Another area y'all might want to look into is Seasdie Fl. It is so beautiful, we are in GA so it's not nearly as much of a long haul as it is for y'all, but it's a great "family friendly" area as well. Seagrove Beach is really close by too, and not as pricy. People ride bikes all over, and Seagrove is just a bike ride to Seaside. I really think y'all would love it:)

  33. I really wish we had family to watch our kids so we could take off like this. We have been to Disney. But that is not relaxing. I would love for Greg and I to hit a different part of Florida and go exploring. You got some wonderful shots!!!

I was just up in your neck of the woods today, grabbing some fireworks by the McD's. Have a great 4th!!!

  35. Looks like you had a blast! We were on Lake Michigan the same week that you were in Florida. So funny I met a women there that told us about a place in Florida that looked so similar to the beach resort that we were at. I wonder if where you were is where she was talking about. I also noticed that you and I took the same reading material on our trip. Coincidence? ;-)

  39. Ahh, Sarasota! My "second" home! Love it there. You DEF have to check out Siesta Key beach next time you go though! Totally worth it! There's a little cove at the very west end of the strip (just before the road bends north) where I almost always can find parking. :) Glad you enjoyed your getaway and thanks for sharing your photos with us!

  43. As I was looking over the first part of your pictures I was saying to myself, boy that looks like Anna Maria Island on the public beach, and then sure enough I started reading. My mom has had a place there since I was in high school, boy this dates me, but it's been over 20 years:) And we go every year for spring break I just love it there. And St. Armand's circle on Longboat is always a fun treat to shop and have dinner too!

  44. I know this is an old post, but I just discovered your blog (love it) and had to comment here - my dad grew up on Anna-Maria! For about 20/30 years, his dad was the only doctor on the island. They sold their house on Holmes Beach a while back due to their age, but that island has such a special place in my heart! I love when other people discover how wonderful it is!

  46. I love seeing these photos! I grew up in the Bradenton/Sarasota area and looking at all your great shots makes me feel like I'm home (I now live in Michigan...yeah. I know). Anna Maria Island was a weekend hang out for me in high school. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed your trip. If you're ever that way again let me know, I know of some great "locals only" shops and food places on the island (and one of them makes the BEST beer battered catfish you'll ever taste)!!!
