a monkey for our monkey

We always joke about Parker being a monkey.  If there is a pole, he will climb it.  A tree, yep, he is probably in it.  A piece of furniture, ledges, railings... Parker loves it all!

So of course it naturally makes sense that he has a thing for monkeys as well.  Like he can relate to them or something.  And last year, when I took a trip to Chicago, I found the perfect sock monkey for my little monkey.

When I returned home, I couldn't wait to give Parker his new monkey as belated birthday gift.  We talked about how the monkey was a special gift from mommy and how it will always be there to snuggle with him, especially during moments that I can't.  We named him "Sock".  Parker has sleep disorders, and Sock was one way of working through them.  It instantly was his companion, a comfort item and he toted it around everywhere...

Of course, he brought it with him on our spring break getaway to Wisconsin Dells.  When we got home, we realized we were short one monkey.  No, not Parker, but his little buddy was missing.  I think my heart hurt as bad as his did.  It wasn't a good moment....

I called and called all over and waited weeks to hear something or find Sock, and as each day would come and go, more tears would as well.  Parker seemed to be finding his way to our room every night and everything seemed off...  Who knew an animal could really have such an impact on a little one?  I finally broke down and had another one delivered...

We are all definitely happy to have our friend back home.

  1. Aw, what a sweetie!
My son has a little beanbag Tigger that was his BFF from about 2 months old. As soon as we realized how important it was I went on Ebay and bought two more used ones to have just in case. I even rotated them out without him noticing on occasion so they would get equally "loved". It was great for when one needed to be washed, and then we knew we'd have a backup if something ever happened to it. ;)

  2. That is so cute!! Especially love the last picture with Parker sleeping with new "Sock".

My son has this red truck that he's currently obsessed with. It's an old one passed down from his older cousins but he takes it everywhere with him - to bed, to daycare, to Grandma's...you name it! I think it's great that children have a security "blanket" that makes them feel safe and at ease.

  3. Awww, poor Parker!

I remember my little brother losing a Kermit figurine when we were on a roadtrip as kids. He tried really hard to convince us to drive the 20+ hours back to Florida to find it and despite calling the hotel we never got it back. Years later I was babysitting for friends and found the very same Kermit toy in their toy bin. They ended up giving it to me and I surprised him with it at Christmas. I've never seen an 18 year old smile so much over a Kermit toy. It brought back many good memories for him and I'm sure that Parker will remember your kind gesture too for years to come.

  7. Aww, I love the expression on his face as he hugs his monkey, he looks content and relieved to have his "Sock". I have three kids myself (two girls and a boy) and they each have their loveys. Boy do we hear about it if their loveys aren't available at bedtime and they definitely don't sleep as soundly when they don't have them.
P.S. I love both your blogs!

  8. Hello! Would you mind sharing where you got that monkey? I have been looking for a replacement for my son's, and don't particularly like the looks of the original sock monkey. All the others I have found are too girly. Thanks!

    1. It is from Land of Nod. And yes, a fantastic gift. The quality is so great and it is so soft. And now he is a member of our family! :)
